What can cause my toilet to gurgle when my washing machine drains?
I have a small house on a septic tank. Here in the last month every time I wash cloths the toilet gurgles. Also the tub drains slower now and the toilet will not flush for some time after the washing machine drains.

your washing machine drain is supposed to have a vent going up through the roof, if it don’t it will make the toilet do that
You might have a septic problem ( it just might need to be pumped out )but check your vent stack on the roof…it could be clogged or if you live in a cold climate iced over.
OH NO! I have been having similar situations on and off.. It’s a backed up main sewer line! I don’t have a septic tank but roots form a VERY large spruce tree have broken through my pipes and catch waste as it goes out my house to the city lines. I recommend getting a plumber in to look through your main sewer line with a camera. You will likely have to get the line rootered out – which is no big deal. Hopefully the pipes haven’t collasped or trees broken through – if they have.. it’ll be time to change them (that is what I have to do :(… pricey unless you can do it yourself)

you may have a clogged pipe. my house does not have a septic tank, but I have experienced the same thing. we have to use a plumbing snake to clear out debris.
You are overloading your septic tank line…and or have a clog…my mother used to drain the machine into the back yard…but the washer was IN the back yard…she’d scoot it onto a piece of plywood off the back porch.
Sams sells some good drain flush gell but may not be good for a septic tank…
you have got a partial blockage in vent or drain/septic line or tank is full.You have to have them pumped every 2 years under normal use.It may be wise to run your sink and washer and tub water to your yard for the grass.You can run lines for this.All that soap kills the natural bacteria…….seen it many times…unless you have new and large double septic tank with drain fields….
Your septic tank may need cleaning. The waste from your lines could be backing up not allowing your dtains to flow freely. Maybe it’s broken tiles in your septic field slowing the drainage from the tank through the field. But lbefore you call a septic guy (and have to pay a lot of money) see if your plumbing vent is reduced with frost .That could slow your drains too.
The vent is not in the right place or someone added the toilet without adding a vent. It sounds like the washer and toilet are on the same drain pipe. It should not be a real problem.The sound you hear is a vacuum being caused by the water draining from the washer and it pulls the water in the toilet trap down. If the drain is somewhat clogged then having the drain cleaned with “High-Pressure Water Jetting” like Roto-Rooter may help.
